Hiking, camping and adventure: prepare for the place
Choose activities that match your ability and confirm local conditions before heading out.

South African outdoor travel can range from a short forest walk to a camping holiday or a demanding trail. Prepare for the actual route and activity, rather than relying on a destination’s reputation.
Know the route
Check opening times, permits, weather, route difficulty and current local notices. Choose a suitable guided option if you need support. Stay on marked routes and follow the operator’s instructions; SANParks publishes specific hiking guidance for Table Mountain.
Carry what the day needs
Take water, appropriate shoes, layers, sun protection and a charged phone. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Do not assume mobile signal will be available throughout a trail.
Check the campsite or activity
For camping, confirm facilities, equipment, access roads and arrival times. For adventure activities, ask about age and fitness requirements, included safety equipment and weather cancellations. Protect natural spaces by taking waste away and following fire restrictions.
